DENTURES
WHAT IS A DENTURE?
A denture is a removable prosthesis, it is one of the replacement options for missing tooth/teeth.
Complete dentures replace a full set of missing teeth, whereas partial dentures work in combination with natural teeth preventing adjacent and opposing teeth drifting out of position after an extraction. A denture can help reduce sagging of the cheeks and lips by replicating the underlying bone and gum structure preventing a sunken appearance.

Types of Denture
There are a range of dentures available to suit individual needs, these dentures include:
- Acrylic dentures
- Cobalt chrome (Metal) dentures: These have a metal framework and so are lighter, thinner and stronger than acrylic dentures. They can clip onto the natural teeth to improve retention.
- Flexible Valplast® dentures: These are flexible partial dentures. They mould between the teeth and gums avoiding the need for metal clasps or full coverage of the palate. These dentures are usually very well fitting.
- Implant retained dentures: By placing a small number of dental implants, it is possible to secure a denture in place, without the need to use fixative.
Denture procedure
It takes on average four appointments to construct a denture. This will include primary impressions, secondary impressions and bite registration, a ‘try-in’ stage, and when you are happy the final fit appointment. This will be explained to you by your Dentist.
What Are Dentures Adhesive
They are products that come in the form of a paste or strip to help give your dentures stronger anchor. Some patients find that denture adhesives give them great assistance. For example, they provide better bite control, add more security, and increase stability.
They’re not really necessary for everybody. This depends on several conditions. For instance, having a dry mouth. A dry mouth can loosen anchor and cause trouble for the wearer.
You may also consider them if you have a job that demands excessive talking or the excessive use of facial muscles.

Alternative to dentures
Implant retained dentures are an alternative to standard removable dentures.
Implant retained dentures are ideal for anyone suffering from loose or ill-fitting dentures and can be life-changing. They offer peace of mind so you can avoid embarrassing situations where your removable denture may let you down. Its a cost effective way of replacing multiple missing teeth compared to a full set of dental implants.
